Unterflurtrasse St. Niklas

The road was opened to traffic after general refurbishment and safety upgrades on 09.06.2016.
The St. Niklas tunnel is now at the highest safety-related level.

Within just nine months, ASFINAG has brought the St. Niklas tunnel on the A11 Karawanken motorway up to the highest safety standards. Since September 2015, the 700-metre-long tunnel between St. Niklas/Faakersee and St. Jakob im Rosental has been renovated and upgraded, in particular with regard to safety features. Among other things, the fire protection, power supply system, video and video detection systems, lighting, emergency call system, radio, variable traffic signs and kerb reflectors (both in LED technology) as well as all doors and gates have been renewed. Four additional emergency call points and three additional cross-passages (escape routes) have also been built. Thanks to the measures that have been implemented, the tunnel is now at the absolute top level in terms of safety. ASFINAG has invested a total of 5.2 million euros in refurbishment and safety upgrades. The first step in releasing the tunnel for traffic took place as planned on Thursday the 9th of June with the dismantling of the traffic management system. The stretch has been open to traffic without restrictions since Friday lunchtime. Thanks to the very good partnership between INSOFT as electrical planner and control cabinet builder, ELIN as installation company and Phönix Contact and Schneider Electric as material suppliers, this project was able to be realised in a very short time.
